To understand the world, you need to understand language. From ancient manuscripts to modern computational models, from how babies learn to speak to the impact of language on society, Linguistics covers the whole human experience.

You will learn to work with data, investigate many different linguistic phenomena and acquire skills in critical thinkingÌýthat will make you valuable to employersÌýin diverse fields. We have cutting-edge techÌýto research language, e.g. eye-tracking devices and professional audio equipment.

Linguistics is a tight-knit group of staff and studentsÌýwhere you can get to know everyone. Smaller class sizesÌýset ÑÇÖÞÉ«°É apart, allowing for more meaningful interaction with your lecturersÌýand for continuous personal support. Students also run the ÑÇÖÞÉ«°É Linguistics Society, which organises events throughout the year.

Our university is in the most bilingual part of the UK, so you’ll be joining a community where bilingualism is thriving. Furthermore, all lecturers in Linguistics speak more than one language. This means that you will be able to experience the reality of multilingualismÌýand the way in which different languages shape society.

After learning about the foundations of linguistics, you’ll be able to specialise. You will also complete a dissertation project on a topic you choose,Ìýwhich you will work one-to-one with a lecturerÌýto develop. You can also tailor your course to include studying abroad and/or undertaking work placement, to broaden your horizons and prepare you for life after graduation.
