About Clinical Psychology

The degree of Doctor of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy/DClinPsych/ClinPsyD) is a professional doctorate in clinical psychology, awarded mainly in the UK and Ireland. The degree has both clinical and research components and qualifies you to practice as a Clinical Psychologist in the NHS and other clinical settings.

Clinical Psychology doctoral programmes in the UK usually last for 3 years and are NHS funded so are only open to Home/EU students. A Doctorate in Clinical Psychology is accredited by the British Psychological Society and is necessary for you to be able to register as a practitioner clinical psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Clinical Psychology is a caring profession with several distinctive features. Chief among these are the close interdependence between practice and research, and the systematic application of psychological models, theories and evidence to the needs of service users and carers, and the development of services. Our Clinical Psychology programmes aim to meet the NHS’s need for HCPC registered Clinical Psychologists. By studying with us, you will develop:

  • an internalised model of reflective practice flexible enough to accommodate change and sensitivity to the needs of service users and carers

Successful Clinical Psychologists promote psychological thinking in health care settings by integrating their clinical, academic and research skills, and through critical, reflective and independent thinking.  From a strong value base, they act with integrity to make a positive difference to peoples’ lives.

Why Study Clinical Psychology?

This three year doctoral programme is a collaborative venture between the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) and ÑÇÖÞÉ«°É. It has several unique features which our students really value:

  • ÑÇÖÞÉ«°É Psychology is a large and cosmopolitan department with staff and students from all over the world
  • In the most recent Research Excellence Framework, 85% of our research was considered either 'Internationally Excellent' or 'World-leading'
  • Over 75% graduated with a 1st or 2:1 in 2021
  • ÑÇÖÞÉ«°É Psychology was established in 1963 making it amongst the oldest in the UK
  • We have many specialist research labs including an MRI scanner, TMS Labs, EEG facilities and a human brain anatomy laboratory

 

Career Opportunities in Clinical Psychology

All our trainees to date have obtained employment as Clinical Psychologists after qualifying from the North Wales Clinical Psychology Programme. A large group remain in North Wales and work in clinical services. A smaller group move away, but often return when posts become available in North Wales. Once qualified, some trainees have gone on to work in the private and third sector, or have taken academic and research positions.
