In this presentation Aotearoa/New Zealand artist and researcher Mark Harvey (Ngāuruahine, Pākehā) will talk about some of his recent arts practice. Topics touched on will include art/live art, activism, ecology, connecting people and communities, in relation to Māori and European notions of productive idiocy, towards a politics of inclusion, environmental health and fun.
Dr Mark Harvey (Ngāruahine iwi and Pākehā) is an New Zealand/Aotearoa based artist and social researcher focussing on social justice, ecology, the environment and mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) and Te Tiriti (treaty-based settler-Indigenous relations). His art practice involves performance, social approaches, public participation, notions of activism, productive idiocy, video and curation. He has presented a wide range of contexts including the Venice Biennale, the ANTI Festival (Kuopio, Finland), City Gallery (New Zealand Festival of the Arts), Live Works (Carriage Works, Sydney), The Physics Room (Ōtatahi, Christchurch) and Circuit Aotearoa (online). Harvey curates widely and has led a number of national research projects focussing on the social dimensions of forest ecology and Māori perspectives across a range of approaches including art, such as Toi Taiao Whakatairanga and Mobilising for Action. He has published writing in a range of publications around all these themes. With a PhD in creative practice Harvey is a Senior Lecturer at Te Putahi Mātauranga (Arts and Education in Creative practices), The University of Auckland (teaching across sections including Live Art performance, visual arts, environment and settler-Indigenous relations).
